joshua trees with orange horizon

antelope valley ca 1988

A classic picture from the high desert of a thicket of Joshua trees with the orange horizon of California Poppies. This orange carpet over 3 miles in length was visible from 20 miles. The grazing of sheep had stunted exotic plants not native to American Deserts, like tumbleweeds, allowing for an unbroken luminous delight. The sheep are gone and the exotic weeds have overgrown this special spot. Previous to Europeans this valley was populated with antelope that grazed this vista clean, thus the name. Goldfields sprinkle the foreground.
