The polarized indigo sky and bright striation of yellow, blue and orange wildflowers make for a surreal photograph. This is a rare flower bloom when coreopsis, lupines, phacelia, gilia and poppies are peaking at the same time.
The intense yellow on top of the hill is due to the specific angle of sunlight reflecting off the glossy surfaces of yellow coreopsis. The contrast with the darker sky is enhanced by velvia slide film plus the fact that the air was very clear.
